Situated south of the Ogasawara Islands and near the Mariana Trench—the deepest point in the world—Saipan and the Northern Mariana Islands form a tropical territory surrounded by clear waters and coral reefs. It is also the closest English-speaking territory to Japan."
Origin & Catalyst
In February 2022, sudden official duties for the U.S. government required my immediate departure from Japan. Since reaching adulthood, I had lived primarily abroad; after enlisting in the Marine Corps at seventeen, I built bonds with fellow Marines who became closer than family. Yet too many of those brothers were lost after service—to suicide, training accidents, or combat. While waiting for Japan to lift its border restrictions, rather than dwelling in grief, I decided to honor one of those fallen brothers by building a 24-hour gym in his hometown of Saipan. From initial concept to opening day took less than three months, after which I returned to Japan in December 2022.
Overview
Drifter’s Gym was built to challenge Saipan's overpriced fitness market by offering the island’s most affordable 24-hour training facility. Rather than operating as an unmanaged budget club, it was run as a private training facility with a deliberate membership cap, commercial-grade equipment, and disciplined standards. Free memberships were provided to disabled veterans, individuals with disabilities, and the first responders serving local public safety.

Tangible Outcomes for My Daughter & Future Children
// Provided my daughter ample time to live within, study, and compare the languages, schooling, and daily environments of both the United States and Japan. Experiencing life on a tropical island alongside the sub-zero winters of northern Hokkaido gave her practical perspective to choose her future path.
// Engineered disciplined operating procedures and remote management systems to minimize administrative drag, proving an operational lifestyle where daily presence in my daughter’s education and upbringing remained the constant priority.
// Established an emergency contingency base: building roots, operational infrastructure, and community trust in both countries secured a safe, independent foundation for our family during times of international instability.
// Demonstrated practical problem-solving and work ethic by building and maintaining a commercial facility from the ground up, giving my daughter an empirical lesson in self-reliance.
// In May 2026, following complete recovery operations from Super Typhoon Sinlaku, transferred 100% ownership of the facility to a local operator. Passing the baton was a calculated risk decision: it preserved essential community fitness infrastructure while insulating personal capital from future economic volatility and preventing friction between my strict, rules-based operational philosophy and the island's relationship-first culture. It served as a clear lesson in business and life: knowing how to let go of attachment, recognize the right moment, and exit cleanly.
